Power of Gaze in Art
Reading throughout the chapter, I found that gaze was about how to establish relationships of power. The act of power is the most awarded to the person who is either looking and/or observing the piece of art as it explains the relationship of us viewing the piece of art. The power of gaze directs the affects of many aspects by viewing art such as identify the difference between the key aspects including the gender, race, language and culture. Gaze is also the object and not who subjects look. By reading the section about gender and the gaze as it caught my attention, the history of the paintings were towards for the most part geared toward the male viewers. But what was surprising is that the female was nude as being the possession of the male artist or male viewers. In this section, there were many pictures of nude women and they were represented as their nude bodies towards the viewers.
Today, many women does not show nude but mostly part of their sex appeal. These kind of sex appeals are examples of popular magazines, perfumes, clothing line, or any other appeals. Many women are shown as sex appeals to catch someones attention to get the viewers to buy the products. Part of the idea of the gender and gaze can still be shocking as you can see the differences between the past and the present and how they compare to be different.
