Movie- Modigliani

The relationship between Picasso and Modigliani have this kind of heart felt friendship and a rival friendship. Modigliani was low class and was growing up poor. Picasso was from high class and was very rich. Modigliani seems like he was held back with a lot of things while growing up. Modigliani have always want the center of attention when he is around Picasso. Picasso was always quiet and thinks he can get away with anything and knows that he is the best painter out of all. He really hates when Modigliani always get the center of attention and it always makes Picasso mad. Modigliani is an alcoholic, would smoke all the time and did drugs for possible things he would be frustrate about and want to make himself better. Picasso was pretty much always frustrate with his paintings that he does not like and would do all over again until he knows it will worth millions.
With this heart felt relationship they have together is that they agree with things about because they have the same common taste. I think they respected each other because of being good friends and they even have the same taste on their inspirational famous painter name Renoir. Towards the end, they both signed up a contest to win $5,000 and complete against each other with other painters as well. Once it came to the competition night, Modigliani never showed up and once they showed Modigliani's painting, there was dead silence. No one ever said anything or clapped. They were in a awe moment until Picasso realize that Modigliani did the best amazing job he has ever seen from Modigliani. Modigliani won the money and later that night Modigliani was dead. Picasso showed up at Modigliani's funeral and was sad about that Modigliani is sad.
Overall it seems like that Picasso wants to help Modigliani to be a serious painter and a serious person. Picasso knows that Modigliani have this talent in him. Throughout the movie, it shows that Picasso do care about Modigliani in some ways. Modigliani didn't seem to show the feelings of friendship he has with Picasso but he probably does inside. Between the two, I think they have this kind of friendship rivalry together.

Chapter 8- Race: Social vs. Genetic

I think I agree with Nancy Burson that the race is social not genetic. The race are more social because we are all in the same social together. I can be surrounded by many races everyday and that is social because they are by you. The cultural of the race is more likely the way someone looks or express themselves around them such as the clothing, music, how they celebrate their holidays, art, their beliefs, what they do everyday and the color of their skin. I think that the skin color takes a lot of affect on people for a long time and I believe that the races are still social no matter what. The races have a lot of organizations or charities and they want to expressed the other races on how they live with their culture. The only problem we have in our world in the past and even today is that different races judge on the other races because of their own stereotypes and how people see the difference from each other. I think it is wrong to judge that way. Many people wants to see or how different races are like. I think it is not a bad thing to be able to express that to the other races. There was this one person that was mention in class was Nikki Lee who wanted to express the other races or cultre besides hers. She dresses them up such as an old person, a skateborder (punk kinda style), a stripper and many more. She wanted to experience and learn a lot about the social environment of the races and their cultures. I think she did not do a wrong thing to do that because she wants to see how we all are different but she knows we all are the same people. I think the reason why I chose the race to be social is because we really are all the same. We are just human beings and survive in many ways. We all have our own ways of life and how we view it or express it. We all need to know that we are just humans and we all are equal the same.

Gallery Viewing # 3

While attending to the third and last gallery, I thought it was okay. I think it would be my second favorite gallery visit since my first favorite one was the second visit we went. The three artist had their own wall to display their artwork. Their speaking to the group were less short than I thought. This gallery wasn't very interesting to me because it was more less boring but there were a few that I like especially the favorite two that I picked by Vedrana and Michelle.

The first piece of art that I pick is from Vedrana Misanovic. The first and the last picture of the leopard and the wolf is an Untitled gallery is a digital media art. The wolf picture, has the drawing of the wolf with a pink background and it has green eyes. I thought it was really neat because of the color, the pink background and the drawing lines to it. The green eyes is the only thing that has caught my attention. The last picture of a leopard that is also an digital media art is also like the wolf art but in a different colors. The color background is lime green and the eyes are pink. Both of the animals caught my attention because one I like animals and two I like the way Vedrana put it all together. The light colors is what I also like about. The middle picture between the two animals is the Otis College of Art and Design which it is also a digital media. This piece of art caught my attention is the colors. I absolutely love the light colors. I like how the light colors made it look like the sun is going down from the beach. It is just really beautiful and I like how the art also have a picture of palm trees. I love going to the beach where I do wish I was there right now. These three piece of art are just beautiful! Vedrana likes her work to be simple and features a drawn element. She enjoys by incorporating drawn elements and likes to feature them as rich colors. She wanted to draw the color to the viewer's eye to the piece that engages them to a closer work. This art is more capture nature through representational subjects and non-objective color.

The second piece of art that I like in this last gallery is the an Untitled and it is made of a photographic print on fiber paper made by Michelle Anderson. This photograph has picture of a group of people's feet. I like the way the picture turn out because it looks like the families feet that can capture a moment. Michelle capture this art as a beauty of a human. Michelle wanted to focus on without a face in the photograph, want to capture the other parts of the body that also have the beauty. That way the other body parts can have an attention in a photograph instead of using the face. I think the reason Michelle wanted to leave this art Untitled because she probably wants the audience to decide on the title because I think it would have a lot of title. Michelle likes to question where else she can take the piece and how much she can work with it while creating her pieces. She wants her photograph more focused on finding a portion of the figure to able to study closer. The close distance of her photograph figure allows the viewer's mind to see a specific part of the body rather than looking at an entire person. I thought this photograph art was really nice because it is something that someone can do and I would probably like to do that someday with my family one day.

Changing Meaning of Advertisements Project

Advertisement # 1- Jillian Michaels

*Change

A. Setting of the Ad was time of May 2010
B. The subject of this Ad is Jillian Michaels selling a supplement that Jump Start your weight loss program of 14 day cleanse and burn.
C. Key Words pretty much "I want you to lose weight".
D. The Story behind this Ad is that Jillian Michaels wants to sell her supplement that is a 14 day cleanse and burn. Her supplement contains a 7 day triple process total body detox and cleanse, that formulated to reduce belly bloat, support colon and digestive system, aid in the liver's natural detoxification process and help feel lighter and more energized.
E. This Ad was produced in 2010 but it can be produced in 2009 since Jillian started selling her supplements. I found it in the USA weekly found in Sunday's paper.
F. Lots of people do read USA weekly every Sunday such as men and women. Jillian's Ad wants people to encourage them to lose weight. Once the men and women look through a magazine bored instead of standing around or staying active, this Ad will catch their eyes because Jillian want others to be healthy and live longer.
G. The audience member would most likely to be women at any age and maybe for men possibly age 30 years or older. I think the Ad will get attention to women mostly.
H. I think this Ad is trying to attract people to possibly make an decision on if they should try Jillian's supplement. Jillian is one of the American's best personal trainer in the world and selling this supplement would help people to lose weight. Jillian's supplement target people to lose weight and get rid of the belly fat.
I. There are no "markers" of race, ethically, gender, age, religion, class and sexuality.
J. The relationship between the texts and the image is the picture of Jillian who has this nice body and she wants us to lose weight if someone who is overweight. The text "I want you to lose weight" shows that Jillian really does care about us and want us to have a healthy lifestyle.
K. This is Ad is promoting to both product and healthy lifestyle. The Ad is promoting to Jillian's supplement but it is also promoting the supplement that it may not be good for people or it may not work for them.
* Within this Ad that Jillian wants people out there who are overweight and wants them to take her supplements because they can work well for them. When people see this Ad who may be overweight, probably would not care about Jillian's supplement because they don't care about skinny stuff or healthy foods. It is part of their decision but if they get real sick or get close to dying than they will take the risk on getting healthier and possibly try Jillian's supplement. It will get them somehow. I decided to change the text to "I want you fat" is what the obesity people see this Ad. This Ad draw my attention because I know that Jillian is one of my role model since I want to be a personal trainer some day just like Jillian and that with this Ad sometimes I know that it will catch someones eyes who have obesity and will go for a try on Jillian's supplements or it won't catch someone's eyes who have obesity and won't try for the supplement, pretty much don't give a crap.

Advertisement #2- Secret deodorant

* Change

A. The setting of this Ad was the time possibly in 2010.
B. The subject of this Ad is the Secret deodorant
C. The keyword in this Ad is "Fear"
D. The story behind this Ad is that the Secret brand to sell the brand new kind of deodorant that has the sheer mineral of a 24 hour that lets your skin breathe. It's a deodorant that you should not be afraid to expose a little skin.
E. The Ad could be produce in 2010 and I found it in People's Magazine.
F. Well this Ad is for women because the deodorant is for them. This Ad was put into People's magazine where a lot of women do personally read about celebrities and everything. Whatever kinds of Advertisements or anything else is put in People's magazine, there will a lot of women will want to buy the product especially like this Secret deodorant. A lot of women sure do want their skin to have a breathe instead of sweat.
G. The audience member could be any young girls or women at any age but mostly maybe young adult or 40 years of age or less will probably buy this kind of deodorant.
H. I think this Ad is trying to make these women that your body is still beautiful when to buy this product. They are trying to draw the audience that this deodorant will let your skin breathe for 24 hours.
I. There is probably about couple of "markers" in this Ad. The gender would be the women. This Ad shows some sexuality as the model in the Ad is showing off her back side skinless. This Ad shows a white model but the product can be sold to any color races. The ages like I said before can be for young adult and for women 40 years of age or less.
J. The relationship between the text and the image is the model in the Ad who is like really beautiful. The brand only looked at this beautiful model who has this great skin shows a lot of attention that a deodorant can look like her. I think the brand wants us to show us that buying this type of deodorant to make the women beautiful in those 24 hours.
K. The Ad is promoting the beautiful lifestyle as a women. The Ad wants to sell their 24 hour sheer mineral kind because they probably want the money. The product may not let your skin breathe for 24 hours. I mean it may work on women or may not.
* Within this Ad, Secret wants to sell their product possibly for money but they would sell this product for women to make them feel beautiful. For the changing I did, I decided to change the texts in the Ad to make it more understanding instead of using the word Fear. In the first text that I change, I wrote Exposure is one of lifes greatest gifts. I decided to let women know that it is okay to be beautiful or not and that this deodorant makes sure you don't sweat and stink. Deodorant is suppose to make sure you don't stink from your under armpit. Another text I wrote is You can expose all of lifes greatest mysteries. I came up with that because so that you can expose anything and it comes out as a mystery. Your beautiful body is a mystery no matter what and it is still beautiful no matter what. I feel like that changing the text makes it better for all sizes of women. I feel like the previous Ad was a little bit more focus on a woman who has the perfect body and the people who are overweight will probably buy the deodorant because of that model in the Ad. I personally don't think I would buy the product because I do not use the Secret Brand but will probably try it if the product tells us that the deodorant makes your skin breathe so I am guessing less sweat so I will give it a try. I will not buy a product that will make us beautiful because I already know that I am beautiful and so is everyone elses. But if there are women that wants to try and look beautiful, they can go right ahead. I thought this Ad was interesting to talk about and what the audience see.

Gallery Viewing #2

Attending to this second gallery visit, I thought it was a lot better than the first one. This gallery was more of a calmer way rather than more scary or confusing way at the first gallery. The first gallery that I pick to be my actual favorite is the "New York Series" by Elizabeth Cramer. This painting is a acrylic on canvas. These three paintings has a picture of New York bridge and looks like it was taken at night time as in black and white. These three paintings are painted as the same bridge but showing as a different way of look like looking left, straight and right of you in that point of view of this painting. This painting have like like buildings surround them and have lights on on on most of them. I like the way she put all this together. It reminded me back when I was visiting New York City in 2005. It was an amazing trip and I remember how beautiful it was being there. Out of those three paintings, I think I like the middle one better because it feels like you are heading to the most beautiful city in the world. As for Elizabeth paintings on what she loves about painting, is she likes seeing a real photograph first before painting a picture. She loves black and white paintings and this is her first time painting and somehow she got this creative. I was impressed. These painting have a lot of principals and elements such as movement, lines and shapes.

My second picture that I like in the gallery is called "Memoirs from Home Series" and it is also made by Elizabeth Cramer. These three paintings were also from acrylic on canvas. They all are like at a beach scene. The beach scene looks like she uses some black and white chalk to it or some pencil to use with but it can be paint but it was hard to tell. Elizabeth drew these paintings that had different scene from the beach. She paint/drew what different beaches looks like and the location around them. Looking at these paintings, it felt like you wish you were there because it was more of a calm quiet environment. My favorite one out of those three painting, I like the beach house along with the lighthouse. It was more interesting how she put all of it together because it was just beautiful and the layout of the lines and shapes with lots of balance to it. Elizabeth likes to see a real photograph and look at the colors and once she would use that variety colors, she would use the painting as a different colors such as black and white which she loves. She just like to look at the image and make the changes. Overall I think the entire gallery was amazing, more interesting to look at and less scary!

Chapter 7-Commodity self

I think I agree with the statement by Stuart Ewen. He said in the chapter that commodity self is "the idea that our selves indeed our subjectivities, are mediated and constructed in part through our consumption and use of commodities" (279). What Ewen is saying here is the concept of ideas that everyone sees and how it consumes in our lives. Advertisements are one example. Showing ad's are mostly likly to be music, clothing cosmetic products, cars etc. So the commodity self is more likely to show us on how we feel towards the the Advertise. Advertisements want to get our, us audience an attention on that certain product for us want to buy because of what we express our commodity self idea on if you want to buy the product or not. I use an example that I have of Skechers Ad. This Ad have bunch of style of Skechers shoes everywhere, also have bunch of cute puppies and have the most popular singer, Carrie Underwood in it. The Skechers Ad want the audience to buy the Skechers but I chose this Ad because it seems like to have so many things in it that will make us buy the product. To me, I don't like the shoes but I think I will buy the shoes anyway because one I do love puppies and secondly I LOVE Carrie Underwood. So you doesn't have to like you the product and don't want to buy it but will buy it because of what the Ad have on it. Commodity self to me is more like an idea of seeing an Ad whether you want to buy it or not buy it.

Gallery Viewing # 2

After viewing the pieces of art in the gallery, this first piece of art caught my attention is from Kate. I really enjoyed these two reflection digital photography along with the 3 shape looking standing piece that is "Who speaks for Planet Earth?! The 3 shape looking shape is made out of stoneware clay, underglazed it and oxide wash. I chose this piece of art because I like the textures of the photography of the water. It looks so flowing and how it it has the many shininess and the color of the water to it. Kate took the photograph of the water of the different flowing to each two of the photographs. I could not basically get all the information when Kate was talking about this piece that I chose but I did hear her say that she likes the atmosphere of the nature. I think the way she use the clay piece as to express on how the earth is when the water is flowing and how the colors of the green brought to it. It just caught my eyes the most. I love the photographs the most.

The next second piece that also drawn my attention is the Impressions of Metropolis by Billy. I really enjoy this six piece of art painting. I am going to explain what I think of each of those six photos look like to me starting from the top left to the bottom right. The first painting looks like a clock that has a person hanging on the clock stick. The second one looks like some buildings with a bridge a long with it. The last picture on the top has a man who seems to take over something. He seems pretty creepy. Now to the middle part. The first from the left, has a picture of a man like praying to God or something because of the candles behind him. The second painting looks like some type of factory that seems to have smoke coming out of them. The last painting is two people kissing each other or else making love. Now to the last paintings. The bottom left picture looks like has a person looking out of a window of his/her apartment seems to be calling out for someone. The middle painting really creeps me out but it looks like two people are going to do something to each other like a fight or something. Last but not least, the painting like has Jesus worshiping his people who are looking at him.

After looking at those six paintings, I thought it was really interesting. Billy seem to use some paint brushes to make all these lines, movements, balance and colors to each of the painting. I am not sure what Billy want to express in them but I think that he wants to like show a story book out of them. I think that some of the paintings are like old century and possibly take place in Paris or elsewhere. I really like the way Billy put all this paintings together. All the other paintings were really great but I really like those two pictures I mention. Great gallery!
